Permaculture practice supports Selinas Family

Selian Lekiryason Koitumet is a 32 years old, born and raised in Ololosokwan village. She got married and was blessed with five children (2 girls and 3 boys). As a mother, she works hard to provide for her family because her husband was not employed. We have faced many challenges brought about by the harsh impacts of climate change problems like drought, which resulted in the family losing about 75% of their livestock. However, she never lost hope.

In 2023, Emanyata Secondary School and PWC conducted a training on how to prepare and take care of home gardens and Selian got the opportunity to attend the three-day training. The training included lectures, video demonstrations, and a practical session at the Emanyata school garden where they taught participants how to go about the whole process.

“I was very impressed with how the school established a thriving garden through permaculture. The school garden had a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, and I was pleased to see the students tending to the garden themselves.”

At the end of the training, they gave participants different varieties of vegetable seeds and instructed us on how to plant them at home. They later visited to monitor the progress of the home gardens.

She appreciates the donation from ESS and PWC. “Now I make money to take care of my family, provide food and buy school needs for my children. I earn money from selling vegetables to bomas around my home and during market days.

“This support from ESS rescued my family from the impacts of a prolonged drought. I would highly appreciate further support in the form of tools and additional training to grow my home garden.”
